Also called, Mo•ho (ˈmoʊ hoʊ) [1935–40; after Andrija Mohorovičić (1857–1936), Croatian geophysicist, who discovered it] The Mohorovičić discontinuity is located at an average depth of 5 miles (8 kilometers) under the oceans and 20 miles (32 kilometers) under the continents. Scientists discovered this boundary because they noticed that the velocity of seismic waves increases sharply as the waves pass from the Earth's crust into the mantle. Andrya Mohorovicic determined the boundary between the crust and the mantle, which is now named the Mohorovicic discontinuity. Velocities of seismic waves were used to identify this boundary. He had seismographs installed before the 1909 earthquake had occurred.
