But there are reliable statistics on the number of people who are displaced by disasters. Although the term “climate refugees” is often used in relation to forced migration in the context of climate and environmental change, this is not a legally valid term as the 1951 Refugee Convention does not recognize environmental factors as criteria to define a refugee. UNHCR recognizes that the consequences of climate change are extremely serious, including for refugees and other people of concern.

(Go here for over 50 previous posts on the topic.)But now comes news that Democrat candidate for President, Julian Castro, wants to make it legally possible for 2019-03-08 The EJF’s report calls for the creation of a specific, legally binding and multilateral framework that protects present and future climate refugees.

Climate Refugees are defined as people who have been forcibly displaced as a result of environmental factors caused by climate change and natural disasters.
