Cs-137 is used in small amounts for calibration of radiation-detection equipment, such as Geiger-Mueller counters. Cesium-137 decays in the environment by emitting beta particles. As noted above, cesium-137 decays to a short lived decay product, barium-137m. The latter isotope emits gamma radiation of moderate energy, which further decays to a stable form of barium. Cesium-137 is significant because of its prevalence, particularly dangerous fission product.

That is a one minus charge. Cesium-137 undergoes high-energy beta decay, primarily to an excited nuclear isomer of Barium 137, which in turn undergoes gamma decay with a half-life of about 150 seconds.

[4] The energies of both the beta decay of cesium-137 and the subsequent gamma decay of the excited barium 137 are 512 keV and 662 keV, respectively. [4]

beta decay of caesium-137. We demonstrate that the exposure of a gold target to a copper vapour laser beam (wavelengths of 510.6 and 578.2 nm, pulse duration of 15 ns) for 2 h in an aqueous solution of a caesium-137 salt reduces the caesium-137 activity by 70 %, as assessed from the gamma activity of the daughter nucleus 137mBa,
Caesium 137 is the principal source of radioactive contamination in the food chain, mainly due to the nuclear bomb tests and the Chernobyl accident. Not a very mobile element, it slowly enters the soil, gradually reaching the leaves, then the roots.
